Feb. 10, 2025

In 2025, the production of ten new feature films and four live-action series will begin with the financial support of the Slovenian Film Centre.

In 2025, the Slovenian Film Centre will have a budget of EUR 12,350,000. This year, the shooting of ten live-action features will begin: the debut Uncomfortable Beings (directed by Maja Križnik, produced by Zavod December), Mila / Marija (directed by Andrina Mračnikar, produced by Vertigo), Confirmation (directed by Darko Sinko, produced by Zavod December), the debut Lost Years (directed by Áron Horváth, produced by Temporama), Tartufferies (directed by Igor Šterk, produced by Studio Virc), A Way Away (directed by Sara Kern, produced by Spok Films), One Month (directed by Janez Burger, produced by Staragara), Tales of Fruits and Monsters (directed by Gregor Božič, produced by Nosorogi), the debut Seaview (directed by Katarina Morano, produced by Vertigo), and Yugoslavia, My Fatherland (directed by Goran Vojnović, produced by Arsmedia).

The shooting of four live-action series will also start: Metod, the Monster from Dolenja vas (directed by Tomaž Gorkič, produced by 666Production), Total Boss (directed by Aleš Žemlja, produced by Art 7 video, Saša Grmek s.p.), Vault (directed by Matevž Luzar, produced by RTV Slovenija), and Aristocracy (directed by Žiga Virc, produced by Lilit).

Since the beginning of January 2025, three documentary features have been showing in Slovenian cinemas: Alpe-Adria Underground! (directed by Matevž Jerman and Jurij Meden, produced by Temporama), The Silence of Life (directed by Nina Blažin, produced by Casablanca), and Once Upon a Time in Soča Valley (directed by Ema Kugler, produced by Zavod Zank). A total of ten full-length documentaries are expected to be screened this year. The youth film Ciao Bela (directed by Jani Sever, produced by Sever&Sever) is also currently showing in the theatres. In March, it will be followed by the debut Little Trouble Girls (directed by Urška Djukić, produced by Spok Films), which is also slated to open the new official competition programme titled Perspektive at this year’s 75th Berlinale. A total of nine live-action features, including four debuts, are to be screened this year.

The SFC Director Nataša Bučar stated: “The increased film budget will allow us to launch a call for script development for genre films in 2025, as well as a call for micro-budget features. In the coming years, this should enrich our cinematography with comedies, biographical and historical films, as well as micro-budget films, which have so far been produced outside publicly supported programmes. In addition to the ten features, the shooting of four live-action series, produced with the financial support of the Slovenian Film Centre, will also begin this year.”

In 2025, the Slovenian Film Centre and its partners will continue the already established workshops aimed at encouraging the development of high-quality fiction, documentary, and animation projects, such as the so-called Scenarnica and Scenarnica Plus, Documentarnica, Kratka scena (in partnership with the Directors’ Guild of Slovenia), and Inkubator (in partnership with the Slovenian Animated Film Association).

In 2025, films will also find their place in institutions that do not specialise solely in the film arts. Thus, the Slovenian Film Centre will maintain and expand its cooperation with the Cankarjev dom cultural and congress centre, particularly by continuing the Our Films at Home project, which offers the pre-premiere screenings of new Slovenian films. Among the events focusing on film music, we should highlight our collaborations with the Slovenian Philharmonic (the project titled How to Compose Film Music – Preparing and Performing a Concert) and Kino Šiška cinema (the project titled Music from Dreams - working title – a Concert of Film Music). In 2025, we are celebrating 120 years of Slovenian cinema. To mark this anniversary, the digitally restored films Kekec (J. Gale, 1951) and Good Luck, Kekec (J. Gale, 1963) will premiere in Kranjska Gora. The event will be organised in cooperation with the Slovenian Cinematheque. Meanwhile, the 28th Festival of Slovenian Film will take place between 21 and 26 October 2025 in partnership with the Portorož Auditorium.

The strategy for the period between 2025 and 2029 has also been adopted. Among other things, it plans for an improved genre diversity of Slovenian films and a greater emphasis on supporting their distribution and promotion. In 2025, the Film Centre will organise six retrospectives of Slovenian films abroad. The largest of these will take place in autumn in Paris. In partnership with various professional organisations, in 2025, the Slovenian Film Centre will also participate in the organisation of four major international events in Slovenia. In March, the Central European Animation Convention will take place in the Goriška region (in partnership with the Slovenian Animated Film Association). In June, the Eurodoc Documentary Film Workshop will be held in Ljubljana (in partnership with the RE-ACT international co-development funding scheme), while the Re-Acting as a Star programme will involve film actors from the region. Finally, in October, Bled will host the Medici workshop (in partnership with Focal from Switzerland), aimed at film centres from Europe and some other countries.
