The filming of the live-action series Aristocracy by Iza Strehar and Žiga Virc, produced by Lilit, has concluded. On this occasion, authors stated: “Aristocracy is a contemporary story about the psychopathology of Slovenian families. It is a series about love, silence, guilt, and expectations passed down through generations, almost as naturally as a family name. Although set in a crumbling castle, the series reflects our times, as traditions, patriarchy, and unresolved relationships still shape our present.
Using horror, black comedy, and psychological drama, we explore how reality frequently fractures within the family environment: sometimes into the grotesque, sometimes into horror, and often into something we prefer to hide. The series takes place over just four days, resulting in intense, tightly packed action where the characters have nowhere to escape – neither from themselves nor their heritage.”
The series, designed as an exceedingly intense narrative, was filmed between October and December 2025. It unfolds over four days and combines humour, suspense, and psychological thriller elements, further exploring modern family dynamics within the genre.
Aristocracy is a darkly funny and intense family series about our true inheritance. Besides the family name, the old castle, and the piles of unpaid bills, there are also fears, secrets, and traumas passed down through generations. When four adult children return home for their sister’s wedding and the inevitable farewell to their dying grandfather, they find themselves entangled in a web of family rules, strange traditions, and eerie apparitions that spiral further out of control. Amid the hellish wedding preparations, crumbling relationships, and secrets slipping out of every corner of the castle, the family’s carefully polished façade also starts to fall apart. Through a wild mix of suspense, humour, and uncomfortable truths, the series shows how hard it is to escape what runs in our blood and how liberating it feels when we finally accept it.
The outstanding cast includes Maruša Majer, Nataša Burger, Andraž Jug, Živa Selan, Ana Urbanc, Raye Spielberg, Tines Špik, Jure Rajšp, Nika Manevski, and Bine Matoh, who create a complex and atmospheric world. Aristocracy takes place over a compressed timeframe, with the series firmly addressing issues of inheritance, family patterns, and intergenerational dynamics.
Written by Iza Strehar and directed by Žiga Virc, the crew includes director of photography Fabris Šulin, costume designer Tina Hribernik, set designer Gregor Nartnik, makeup designers Tinka Prpar and Marta Šporin, and editor Špela Murenc Škulj.
The series is produced by Iza Strehar and Žiga Virc, with Ivana Jurković as line producer and Raye Spielberg (USA) as associate producer. The project is co-financed by the Slovenian Film Centre.
