The Carinthian Slovenes are one of the minorities in Austria. Their rights are recorded in the Article 7 of the 1955 Austrian State Treaty. Over decades the implementation of these rights has proved to be very difficult and the number of minority members has been dramatically diminishing form year to year. The main pillars for the maintenance of the Slovenian language are the cultural and choral societies in the villages of Southern Carinthia.
