Synopsis
The border region of Slovenia, Italy, and Austria is full of silenced stories of violence that carry historical traumas from generation to generation. The film gives voice to various individuals from all sides of the border, enabling them to speak about both their ancestors and today's challenges.

Director's statement
Raising this topic brought instant labels and doubts. Is it historical relativism? Absolutely not—there is no compromise with fascism. But we can listen beyond ideology, hearing individuals whose stories matter.

A feature-length documentary by Darko Sintič and Jure Kreft, featuring selected interviewees – people living in border regions who still ask themselves, ‘Who am I?’ – brings to light personal stories that have been silenced and suppressed across generations – stories carved out by the 20th century on the western border and which still resonate with us today. The documentary is not merely a chronicle of the past. Shadows of Silence does not look back to assign blame, diminish responsibility, or settle historical scores. The film urgently calls on us to listen to that other, parallel national memory – the painful story of a neighbour likewise pushed into the shadows, into second-class status, into silence.
The film, whose distinctive rhythm is vitally shaped by the music and animation of historical events, courageously invites reflection on how traumatic experiences affect individuals and society. Above all, it makes a humanistic call for boundless tolerance, coexistence, and peace on all sides of the borders.
It is a plea and a reminder that builds bridges, not walls.
