A wealthy farmer takes pity on them and allows them to cultivate and settle on a plot of land commonly known as "the Barren". In spite of the hardships of poverty and the unfruitful land, the family stubbornly struggles against fate and ekes out a marginal existence - until the plague sets in. The only surviving son meets and marries an impoverished girl and although he does not love her, a child is born to them. The hardy rebels continue their struggle for survival - despite all the misfortunes, sorrows and injustices they must endure.
