In the wild and turbulent times after the Second World War, Blanka marries the high-ranking political functionary Pavle. Yet not long after their wedding, Pavle is arrested for his anti-Stalinist ideas and taken to the dreaded prison camp of Goli Otok (Barren Island). Left alone, Blanka turns to photography to distract her and in time finds some joy in opening a studio with her partner Laco. Soon, though, it becomes clear that her business partner is a conman. Pavle returns from his internment, but although they realize that their breakup was caused by the political elite's cruel incursion into their private lives, their relationship is fraught with cold bitterness and misunderstandings. Blanka attempts to drown her seemingly unending sorrows in alcohol and makes a pass at her only best friend. But even this last straw, which she had set all her hopes on, snaps. Are all the loves of Blanka Kolak doomed to fail? Blanka begins to wonder if she will ever find love in this life and whether a life without love is worth living at all.
