Synopsis

Imagine a world in which it is forbidden to express oneself in one’s own language, a world in which a teacher can use any kind of violence to enforce this prohibition. This is the world of an 8-year-old Julka in Italy in 1920s.

Julka is a Slovenian-speaking eight-year-old girl who has two friends, Danilo and Marko, with whom she is inseparable. Their lives change drastically when the fascist regime bans the use of local and minority languages and begins a period of persecution and oppression. One day, a teacher hears Julka speaking Slovene in class, so he punishes her and uses violence to enforce his excessive nationalism. The story for the screenplay is based on a short story by the writer Boris Pahor, The Butterfly on the Hook.
