At the very beginning there was the river Soča, a wild river that not only scooped its way through the gorge to the sea but also formed the characters of people living along. And there, where the river comes out of the gorge and its wildness calms, is Solkan. Therefore, the people of Solkan are best connoisseurs of the double nature this river has. Traditionally handy joiners soon began making boats fit for travelling on such a demanding river. In 1947 the border cut the river in half; on one side, it remained Soča and Isonzo on the other. The battelllieri were not allowed to ply down the river towards Gorica any more, they could only go upstream.
