Gaber is a pianist who lives solely for music and refuses to deal with any of the down-to-earth problems brought on by the war. Nevertheless, he is arrested by the Germans when they find five-pointed stars (the symbol of the liberation front) in his musical scores. Soon after his arrest, a freedom-fighter from the underground fleeing from his pursuers seeks refuge in Gaber's school and hides his gun in the old piano. After several adventures, the piano ends up in a church where members of the White Guard collaboration forces are stationed. When the Partisans decide to blow up a White Guard outpost, the brave Anua volunteers to play a certain tune on the piano to inform the partisans that the explosives they need for their operation are in place. The Partisans succeed in destroying the outpost, but Anua is captured by the enemy. Will the tune that Mr. Gaber plays on the piano at the end of the film in honour of Anua's bravery be one of joy or a mournful farewell?
