Workers' Wings
Ilir Hasanaj, Kosovo, 2024, 19'
video description

Injured labourers are looking at us. How do they feel? What are their hopes? What does the future hold for them? Every line on their face has been sculpted by life itself. In contrast, a system filled with danger and injustice looms overhead.

-

Jury Statement
Among the many intriguing documentary experimental films in the FeKK BAL regional programme, the topic of neglected workers’ rights, told with the use of an elaborate visual approach, resonated strongly with us. The gaze on broken older male bodies and the consequences of a neo-liberal capitalist system on the individual showcases the flaws in our society. . The FeKK Grand Prix goes to “Workers’ Wings” by Ilir Hasanaj.

Like a Sick Yellow
Norika Sefa, Kosovo, 2024, 23'
video description

An immersion into Nora’s memory, where realities merge, the bad and the beautiful intertwine until it’s all mingled and something else is formed. A tragedy foretold.

-

Jury Statement
When a phrase is repeated over and over, it loses its meaning and we start to question its truth as the tension grows. A heavy cloud spreads over the portrayed family - is there an arranged marriage? Is there domestic violence involved? All these possibilities are brutally cut by the arrival of war in rural Kosovo. The FeKK BAL Award goes to Norika Sefa for her film “Like a Sick Yellow”

Line Rider
Simon Intihar, Slovenia, 2023, 24’
video description

Like any mad genius, Boštjan Čadež lives life on his own creative terms. Art. Music. Robotics. There’s nothing his mind can’t conquer – except perhaps the legacy of his globally famous, generation-defining video game ‘Line Rider’… and his tendency to self-destruct.

-

Jury Statement
The short documentary skilfully navigates between two levels: On the one hand, it shows the fascinating character of Boštjan Čadež, whom we get to know both through his intimate relationship with the director and through his creative thought process. On the other hand, we see the socio-cultural impact of Boštjan's play Line Rider, which has profoundly affected many lives and built communities of people, including those who are usually marginalized. A watchable, humorous and emotional film experience.

Land of Mountains
Olga Kosanović, Avstria, 2023, 28'
video description

An insurance scam and the left thumb of the single father Vladimir find themselves in a low-key tragedy about the Kafkaesque barriers of the Austrian immigration law.

-

Jury Statement
The film depicts the complex migration experiences of Vladimir, a single father living with his daughter in Austria - from the absurdity of bureaucratic procedures to the daily struggle for survival. We get to know the character not only as a template migrant, but also through an intimate, playful family relationship. In fact, the film also approaches the immigrant experience with humour and irony. The daughter's innocent daydreams of a trip to Thailand collide with the harsh reality of the meatpacking industry, as only her father's self-harm can save them from deportation from the country.
